The tightening knobs have plastic handles. Other than that I don't believe so the main connection points and stress points are metal.

Dear Custom as long as other brand's ballhead has a standard 3/8 screw mount, it could be replaced.

Is this a resistant tripod for travel / outdoors? also can i change the head for a fluid pan & tilt drag head?

yes, the tripod is also suitable for outdor and travel; and you can change the balll head for other head if the screw mount is okay
