1. Data & facts

The K&F CONCEPT Black Mist 1/8 filter in 82 mm is clearly aimed at photographers and videographers who want to create a subtle, cinematic look without sacrificing image sharpness or color reproduction. High-quality optical glass with a 36-layer nano coating (Nano-Xcel Pro) is used, which significantly reduces reflections and is also water, oil and dirt repellent.

2nd first impression

Even when unpacked, the filter makes a very high-quality impression. The brass frame feels sturdy and precisely manufactured, nothing rattles or looks cheap. The filter can be turned cleanly onto the lens without tilting or blocking, a detail that you quickly learn to appreciate, especially in everyday life. The glass itself also looks absolutely clear and neatly finished. There are no visible streaks, irregularities or color stitches. Overall, you immediately get the impression of a product that is located well above the typical entry-level filters.

3rd practice test

In practical use, the Black Mist 1/8 shows exactly what you would expect from this strength: highlights are gently defused, highlights get a subtle glow and the contrast is minimally reduced without the image appearing soft or “muddy”. Especially when it comes to portraits, it is noticeable that skin tones look more natural. Small skin irregularities, pores or hard light edges are subtly reduced without looking like artificial retouching. At the same time, basic sharpness is maintained, even with high-resolution sensors.

When shooting at night and on the street, light sources visibly benefit from the filter:
street lamps, car headlights or window lights appear more atmospheric without uncontrolled halos or loss of contrast. Even in backlight, the image remains surprisingly stable, which clearly speaks for the effective multi-coating.

In the video sector, the filter provides a very pleasant, cinematic look, which is ideal for interviews, portrait shots or scenic shots, especially if you want to consciously remove some “digital harshness” from modern cameras.

My conclusion

The K&F CONCEPT Black Mist 1/8 is an excellently balanced diffusion filter for anyone looking for a fine, professional cinema look without losing sharpness, colors or control. Workmanship, optical quality and practical results are on a level that is otherwise more familiar from significantly more expensive filters.
For photographers and videographers who want to design consciously instead of exaggerating effects, this filter is a clear recommendation.

Having used the 1/4 strength diffusion, I sought an even more subtle effect for specific scenarios, primarily bright outdoor shoots and clean commercial portraits where I needed just a whisper of halation. My intent with this 1/8 Black Diffusion filter was to take the edge off the harsh, unforgiving sharpness of modern digital sensors and introduce a minimal, glowing bloom to highlights without noticeably reducing image contrast.

What I Like About the Product (Pros)
The subtlety is the greatest strength. The 1/8 strength is perfect for making a portrait look instantly more flattering by smoothing skin texture, yet the overall image remains crisp. It handles harsh backlighting beautifully, creating a gorgeous, controlled glow around practical lights or the sun. The 36 Multi-Layer Coatings on this XPRO series filter are exceptional; the image remains neutral in color, and I have experienced absolutely no ghosting or flares, which is crucial for maintaining professional image quality.

Drawbacks to the Product (Cons)
The effect is so subtle that some beginner photographers might not immediately notice the change in certain lighting conditions. You truly need to be shooting with strong highlights or dedicated studio lights to see the characteristic glow. Because of its black diffusion elements, it might slightly reduce the exposure by a fraction of a stop, which is minor, but requires attention to the light meter, especially in low-light environments.

Setup: As with other filters from this brand, the setup is flawless. The brass threads on the 72mm ring are machined with precision, allowing the filter to screw onto the lens quickly and securely. The slim profile means I can stack it with a basic UV filter without any risk of vignetting on my full-frame camera.

Build/Quality: The XPRO series build quality is outstanding. The metal ring is robust, and the glass is highly polished. It feels like a premium piece of equipment built to last years in a professional gear bag.

Functionality: This filter functions as a texture-smoother and a subtle highlight bloom creator. It is an ideal tool for videographers, as it gives motion a refined, polished cinematic feel right out of the camera.

Durability: The filter’s glass and coatings are highly scratch-resistant and durable. It holds up well to frequent lens swaps and necessary cleaning between setups.

Care: Thanks to the extensive multi-coatings, the filter is easy to maintain. It actively repels water and dust. A simple puff of air and a gentle wipe with a microfiber cloth is all that is ever needed to restore it to perfect clarity.

Ease of use: This is a set-it-and-forget-it tool. Once it is on the lens, the effect is applied automatically. There are no electronic settings or adjustments needed, making it a simple, powerful creative modification that integrates seamlessly into a fast-paced shooting environment.

Price for value: Given the superior 36-layer coating, the professional-grade build, and the highly desirable, nuanced photographic effect it delivers, the purchase price is an excellent investment. It provides an advanced, subtle cinematic look that significantly improves the final image quality and saves time in post-production, offering superior value compared to many competitors.

Summary and Recommendation
The K&F CONCEPT 72mm Black Diffusion 1/8 Filter is the perfect choice for the photographer or videographer who wants a polished, slightly dreamy look without losing sharpness or contrast. Its subtlety makes it extremely versatile, working across high-end portraits, vlogging, and complex video scenes. The XPRO build quality is top-tier. I would highly recommend this filter as the essential secret weapon for a more refined digital image.

For some time now, brands like K&F have brought quality filters closer to more and more users. Previously, for filters of this level, it was necessary to invest 2/3 times more. Now, you can get them at a price, which without being cheap, is much more reasonable and without sacrificing quality.

The first thing you notice when you receive it is the quality of construction, with a metal frame and glass that does not give a feeling of fragility. The filter has the correct weight, neither too heavy to unbalance the lens nor so light as to appear to be of low quality. The 36 layers of nano coating are not just a marketing term; when you work in difficult conditions such as backlighting or night scenes with many light sources, the low reflectivity (which according to specifications is 0.15%) is immediately noticeable, eliminating those annoying phantom flashes that ruin so many shots.

I've done several tests between this filter and applying similar effects in post-production, and the difference is substantial. The effect it achieves on the skin is soft and natural, blending imperfections without looking artificial, something that is very difficult to replicate in editing. And keep in mind the amount of hours that are saved.

The 1/8 effect is subtle but definitely perceptible, ideal for those looking for that cinematic touch without exaggeration. Intense lights acquire a soft halo that adds character to the image, and skin tones look more uniform without losing texture. Video is especially useful for creating that aspect of a film that is so much sought after today. However, keep in mind that it is not the right filter for all situations; in landscape or architectural photography where you want to capture maximum detail, this filter can reduce sharpness, although in a very subtle way.

The thread fits the lenses perfectly, without getting stuck or loose, making it easy to switch quickly between shots. The price may seem high compared to other options on the market, but after trying cheaper filters that generated unwanted color dominants or irregular effects, it's a worthwhile investment for the consistency and quality of the results.

A Great Softening Effect!

This K&F Concept Black Mist or a diffusion style filter, is a nice piece of glass to take some of the sharpness out of the increasingly high resolution images we capture. I love shooting Hi-Res but like most anything it has its downsides to it, one being it can be overly sharp. Adding this Black Mist filter does wonders to take the edge off of things you want to look best, like your subjects. This does that by creating a smooth and soft look to skin tones making them appear more natural and lifelike. As with all K&F products I own, this is a top quality item, the glass is clear and free of imperfections, and creates an excellent quality image.

Even when unpacked, the K&F Concept Black Mist 67mm effect filter makes an impression: The black and gold packaging looks like a statement from the manufacturer — elegant, heavy and well designed. The cardboard can even be converted into a picture frame — a charming, albeit somewhat exaggerated, detail. The package includes a shrink-wrapped cleaning cloth and a high-quality stitched protective case with a magnetic leather cover. The presentation conveys premium standards — and the filter itself delivers on this promise.

In practice, Black Mist provides a wonderfully subtle blur. Highlights are surrounded with a fine, almost cinematic glow without the image appearing muddy or losing contrast. In contrast to many cheaper effect filters, the look always remains restrained and elegant — visible only where it looks artistic, for example in skin tones or in backlight situations.

Of course, the filter is not an all-rounder: The effect is too fine for everyday subjects or documentary work. But anyone who wants to play with lighting moods, enhance portraits or add a touch of cinematic look to nighttime scenes will love it.

Conclusion: Fine packaging, excellent workmanship and a subtle, professional effect — a filter for photographers with a sense for nuances.

Fabulous filter for portraits and celestial portraits. I am a photographer that specializes in night photography. This filter is fantastic to make the colors of the stars pop! Like all K&F filters, this is well made and is a welcome addition to my arsenal of filters. Use it for people, landscapes and more. This is one of my favorite filters (and I have many) in my kit.
Everyone should have this in their arsenal

The subtleness of the 1/8th filter is great. It creates just enough haze in your shots to make them feel dreamy and cinematic without making them seem too soft.

These feel very high quality and the case is probably my favorite filter case I have seen. There is a neat strap system that lifts the filter out so you don't have to touch the filter and make it all grubby
