Why does the black cross appear?

All variable ND filters have this problem: The longer the focal length, the less the cross shadow is affected. Cross shadows and vignetting are obvious in large light reduction gears. As you continue rotating, the shadows will naturally disappear. This is a physical phenomenon, not a product issue.
